would be fair to compare both pit stops with fueling. would be almost as mind boggling as this one 🙂
It would be interesting to see what would happen if they had the same limit on pit crew size today. The 1950 pit crew is only three people. The current crew is more than 20. Hardly a good comparison.
i count 4 guys in the 1950 video, looks like 20+ in the 2013 video.. they should change the pit rules back to the ’50s version, and to make it even more challenging, only one wrench can be used.

Sure, but note that no sledgehammers were involved in the 2013 stop. That stop took less time than a single swing of that hammer.
Looks like about 21 people-seconds now, compared to maybe 120 people-seconds then. Much more efficient, yes, but with much more resources, both labor and (technologically advanced) capital.
Funny? The time ratio as seen in these pit stops compare to my ‘in the sack time’ ratio when compared to times in the1950s.
It is like comparing our federal government to the private sector!
It’s not as much of a comparison as it is a contrast, past and present. A fair comparison would be with other present-day pit crews similarly equipped and manned.
No point in grousing about money and capital expenditures. That wouldn’t be happening if they weren’t making tons more than they spend.
Would have been more apples to apples if the 2nd one was IndyCar. IndyCar limits the number of crew over the wall to 6. More than the 4 in 1950, but far less than Formula 1 allows.
IndyCar’s limit is 6. Compare two Indy 500 pit stops and you’re pretty close.

I don’t know. I think it’s unfair to compare the 1950 pit stop to private corporations like Comcast. The pit stop was far more efficient.
