Advice on working from home

Matt Gemmell does a great job on offering some advice on the dos and don’ts of working from home. Over the years, the hardest thing I’ve found is the discipline to leave work and spend time doing something else. I still haven’t found a remedy for that.

I’ve been doing this for many years. The most important thing I have found is to have 1 computer for work and 1 computer for home. At the end of your workday, you should put the work computer to sleep and walk away from it until the next day.

The way to think of it is that you’re replacing an office with a desk/computer/terminal at home. In the same way that you would walk out of the office every evening, you need to walk away from the desk/computer/terminal every evening. These days, it is really easy to have a Mac for work and an iPad for home, so you can still use Facebook or Netflix or iMessage or FaceTime in your personal life without having to touch the work Mac.
