Apple’s rumored new Apple TV

Salvador Rodriguez reporting the LA Times:

For the next week, customers who buy an Apple TV at one of the tech giant’s retail stores will reportedly receive a $25 iTunes gift card as part of a promotion that could signal a new Apple TV is on its way.

(Emphasis added)

  • More info required. “Nope” in what time frame?

“a new Apple TV is on its way”. A new Apple TV is definitely on its way at some point. Is the “nope” to mean, “not this year?” “Not this month (March)?”

    • dustinwilson

Could Jim mean “nope” pertaining to the $25 gift card’s signaling of an impending new Apple TV?

      • Nope like, will let you know what nope means later when it does or doesn’t happen.

      • lucascott

I suspect this is a yes. That he is talking about the notion that the promo has anything to do with when new hardware is coming out.

But I also suspect he is talking about these rumors that Apple will announce something within the month that won’t be out until the holidays.

either they will announce it and release it now, or do both later. That is their style.

What might happen ‘now’ would be previewing new Apple TV software features at WWDC that will launch in the fall with iOS 8. to give developers time to get ready for it. Especially if those features include bring the ATViOS in line with the device version so that current apps can be adjusted for use on the Apple TV. Not every app mind you. Only certain types of apps would be approved, video, photo sharing etc stuff. I don’t see Apple trying to make the Apple TV into a WebTV mini computer and putting on Facebook, email etc

    • this is the very site you two write on. why don’t you call each other and then publish an article?

      • BugC

  • TrueCopy

Likely “nope” that the promotion is not a signal of an impending release. That’s the way I read it, anyway.

  • PHEW! Dodged a bullet there.

I just bought an AppleTV, and I’m hooking it up this weekend. Glad to know I’m not going to be suddenly a generation behind. Inevitably it’ll happen, but this “nope” assures me it’s not happening soon.

    • MichaelQ

Oh it’s happening soon, this just isn’t a signal. 😉

  • MichaelQ

Maybe it’s a signal of a price drop?

Wait – do iTunes cards come in $25? (don’t in Australia)

  • SockRolid

Yay! (I still like my trusty old 2nd-gen Apple TV.)

  • Bob Warren

More like it signals that the current Apple TV will soon be priced down to $75, to make way for the new box.

  • alextheukrainian

Nope as in no impending release of new hardware. But I bet new software to open up the Apple TV App Store IS in the works and may see the day this spring. But then maybe it’s WWDC-worthy… 😛

  • imthedude

Ugh. Update the sht or kill it off. Giving us some anime and wrestling channels isn’t really updating nor giving a sht about the product. There has to be more than that.

    • kevinbuchananphoto

What an odd viewpoint. Why “kill it off?” What sense could that possibly make?

It’s a successful product already and it works well at what it does. I love mine. Any update beyond what it does now will just be gravy.

      • imthedude

It’s a frustration viewpoint. I’ve been an apple tv user since the big white box. It’s absolutely gotten better, but I still don’t see it a complete product. Adding arbitrary channels, arbitrary to me anyway, isn’t my idea of updates.

    • my performs it’s job to be done every single day. it’s working quite well and offers value.

Well you know there was rumor from WSJ that Time Warner was about to do a deal just before Comcast bought them.

So that means it is cancelled. and Apple has just informed Jim to tamp down rumor sites.

    • lucascott

given that it was a rumor perhaps it wasn’t cancelled. because it never existed

      • iLollus

These aren’t the droids you’re looking for

    • “Apple has just informed Jim to tamp down rumor sites.”

LOL No – that didn’t and doesn’t happen.

  • Evan Moore

Nope means it’s NOT signaling a new Apple TV is on its way. Emphasis is added towards what’s in BOLD. So, the rumors are not true, do not expect a new Apple TV any time soon like in the next 3 to 6 months. Wait for another rumor after 6 months then come here to get confirmation and then wait another 6 months… repeat this process.

    • Shameer Mulji

In iOS 7.1, there is a reference to an Apple TV 4,1, which signals that a new Apple TV is coming. Question is, when?

      • Evan Moore

not any time soon 🙂 but one day…

        • Thorsten Hindermann

Next attack on my credit card :-)!!!

  • Thorsten Hindermann

At arrival we will see what is coming!

  • MichaelQ

Figure the $25 card is just a nice way for Apple to promote iTunes Festival at SXSW and you can watch these cool shows and loads more on an AppleTV.
