Interview with Satya Nadella from before he was the (likely) next Microsoft CEO

Om Malik:

Before he was the front-runner to be the next CEO of Microsoft, I sat down with Satya Nadella in San Francisco. We talked about the cloud, competition and the future of Microsoft. It’s very revealing, the challenges facing whoever is soon-to-be-announced new CEO.

Interesting to see how the (maybe) next Microsoft CEO thinks.

Nadella’s Wikipedia post says that his official title is “executive vice president of Microsoft ’s Cloud and Enterprise group.” Guess which is the most important word in that title.

You guessed it. “Enterprise.” Microsoft needs to fend off Apple in the enterprise space to protect their bread-and-butter corporate IT revenue. The consumer space? Forget it. Consumer products are far outside of Microsoft’s core competencies, and may forever be.

The biggest service this guy could do for the most people as Microsoft’s new CEO is to focus more on enterprise-level back-end services and less on end-user software.

The market has passed judgment on Windows 8 and Surface. The only people who seem to love Office in any quantity are the people who procure, deploy, and administrate it. Most everybody else buys it because they believe they have to, not because they want to.
