With all due respect paid to the creators of cutting-edge applications and Web sites…

“User Experience” is a new-media subcategory of design. Because every generation likes to believe it invented something that it didn’t, so it invents new terms to describe old ideas.

Graphic designers have been creating work that attends to the user’s experience for a lot longer than the Internet has existed.

Graphic design is a subset of User Experience design. Graphic design doesn’t cover rewriting an app’s entire codebase to make it 50% faster, but User Experience does.

What a UX designer does depends on the platform:

    • Web: UX designers make documents harder to read • iOS 7: UX designers apply coats of paint but don’t improve anything • Windows: UX designers copy Zune interface repeatedly for the last 5 years • Android: UX designers make Trojan Horses look like iPhone apps • Linux: UX designers — we don’t need no stinking UX designers!
