Target refuses to sell ‘Beyoncé’ due to iTunes-first launch

The Verge:

“At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections.” a spokesperson said to Billboard.

Waah…

It was all good when Beyoncé was giving Target an exclusive version of a previous album with six tracks you could not get anywhere else. That was fine. But the minute Target doesn’t have the exclusive they cry like a baby. I’m sure the folks at Best Buy and Walmart are applauding Target’s decision — it means more customers for them. There is no time of year when foot traffic is more valuable than December. All those customers walking into Best Buy or Walmart to pickup the new Beyoncé album might very well walk out with $50 or $100 or even $200 more in merchandise that they purchase for holiday shopping

Many companies do this crap. I say ‘eat a snickers’. Digital is the future and soon the quality will be able to be on par with disks. Folks like Beyoncé jumping to this ship can only help to speed up the labels etc taking it seriously

    Oh boo-fucking-hoo.

“We don’t know how to compete with digital sales and educating people about the higher quality is too hard and too few kids care about this.”

    Cry me a river.

Yup, refusing to sell a product that your customers are looking for, especially a world renowned artist like Beyoncé, sounds like a great way to stay at the top of the customer’s mind the next time they are looking for a CD or other types of media.

Their loss. Perhaps they can make up for it in sales of poorly-made socks and cheap household appliances.

I’m sure all of the big retailers have threatened this at one point. The thing is, Beyonce can get away with it because she is a mega star and her audience is savvy enough to know how to purchase a thing from iTunes.

Kids: Instead of asking grandma to buy you the Beyonce album, just ask grandma for an iTunes gift card from Target. Problem solved.
