The “anyone but Richard M Stallman” license

Depending on how you feel about the Free Software Foundation and about its founder, Richard Stallman, you’ll either find this license funny or infuriating. I definitely found it interesting.

EXCEPTIONS: Richard M Stallman (the guy behind GNU, etc.) may not make use of or redistribute this program or any of its derivatives.

This is now my favorite license EVER!

  • Mother Hydra

Very funny, couldn’t have happened to a better misanthrope.

People who find this infuriating probably brought it on themselves. While Mr. Stallman made a lot of great contributions to open source, he’s lost his way.

He’s forgotten the true definition of freedom, and also forgot that the purpose of computing is to enable people to do other tasks. It’s not “computing” itself.

I don’t have any particular affinity for the GPL. I think BSD/MIT and similar often accomplish as much or more from a utilitarian/pragmatic perspective.

I have tremendous respect for Stallman though, and so far, he has demonstrated a much deeper and more thoughtful understanding of freedom and the purpose of computing than your comment evinces. If you care to make actual arguments, rather than bland assertions, I’d be willing to consider otherwise.

This is not the place for writing essays. My assertion is as “bland” as anyone else’s comment.

Everything I read about Stallman exemplifies my point. He puts openness above all else. When confronted with the fact that companies’ proprietary software more often results in easier to use software, he calls them fascists and goes on about how we don’t have freedom. He believes every last piece of software should be open source. That only benefits programmers, not end users.

Sorry, but yes, he made a lot of contributions, but now his views are total nonsense.

Having seen video of the guy preaching absolute dogma while picking his toes in public, I find this very funny, indeed.

      …and eating it.

      • Moeskido

I had yet to make lunch when I posted that. You understand.

  • Patrick Henry,The2nd

    HAHAHA! I love it!

  • satcomer

I wonder if he is still eating his toe jam, :)

    • http://geekfun.com/ Erik S.

I could care less. I don’t care about your toe jam either, in case you were going to bring that up.

Note that the license’s author has indicated that he would be amenable to modifying the license if RMS were to ask.

  • JackieCrown

Ha ha, so funny, let’s all make fun about and insult somebody who, despite likely suffering from some kind of mental problem, managed to contribute a great deal to software engineering, and probably wrote some of the stuff that powers the very computer that you are right now typing your comments on. Congratulations, everyone. Good job.

Do you think he’s suffering from a mental problem?
