Elop would consider selling Xbox as Microsoft CEO

Besides emphasizing Office, Elop would be prepared to sell or shut down major businesses to sharpen the company’s focus, the people said. He would consider ending Microsoft’s costly effort to take on Google with its Bing search engine, and would also consider selling healthy businesses such as the Xbox game console if he determined they weren’t critical to the company’s strategy, the people said.

Xbox is the only Microsoft product I currently use.

If Bing is up for sale, would Apple buy it?

In my opinion, that would be an incredibly smart move. Google is leveraging their search for absolutely everything, and I think ultimately, Apple will need to get into that market and leverage it for themselves. Buying Bing would give them an incredible headstart on that work. Having full control would also really help search integration with Siri. But I think there’s isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell Microsoft would sell Bing, unless they were literally going broke. I’m pretty sure being a player in search is critical for them.

Why does Apple need to get into that market? That makes about as much sense to me as them “needing” to get into the netbook market.

Just because there is some money to be made somewhere does not mean that Apple needs to pursue it. That attitude is how Microsoft became the sprawling, unfocused mess it is today.

Why not hire Elop as CEO? He did such a remarkable job turning Nokia around – leveraging their outrageously high featurephone market share and turning them into a world-beating smartphone power… wait! What? I must have dozed off there and was dreaming of an alternate universe.

As near as I can tell, what Elop would do is monumentally boneheaded, ranking with how the CEO of Sears turned the world’s most powerful mail-order retailer into an idiotic mall staple at the very time Amazon, Lands End etc. were beginning to demonstrate the power of PC-driven delivery. Elop’s expressed desire to get rid of Microsoft’s only forward-thinking opportunities, the Xbox and Bing, to concentrate on fucking OFFICE ranks up there with being on the Titanic and giving away lifeboats (including theirs) while doubling down on deck chairs.

To put it in Great White North terms, Elop’s skating to where the puck used to be, not even where it is now.

Bold moves but I think nixing Xbox would be bad. Bing? Eh.

Does Microsoft realize killing Bing would make Google even more powerful? It would be better for them to loose 500M than for Google to make 1 Billion.

Wil Shipley said it before I could: “Let’s sell the only decent thing we make, so we can focus more on our core competency: making crap.”
