Reddit running in the red

Reddit has 70 million page views per month. That’s a heady number. Someone somewhere is thinking of ways to turn this into big money.

I can’t help but wonder if Reddit will turn the corner and become a revenue pursuing entity, or keep their sights on providing the service they provide so well. A classic moment in a company’s life. Wonder which way they will turn.

This would be a great opportunity to have the community “design” a long-term revenue plan. Of course, gaining consensus would be extremely complex, given the size and engagement of the Reddit community, but it could also come up with several new and innovative ways for a site like Reddit to monetize in a way the community would accept and understand.

GAWD can you imagine the bitching and complaining as every single comment gets downvoted? I don’t want to live in that reddit. I am a bit sad that they are running in the red, all these social sites that start without a firm financial plan all seem to struggle when they reach this point. We should all hope reddit avoids the errors of facebook and twitter who have both decided their true users are advertisers and companies.

If the customers aren’t advertisers, okay.

        Where’s the money come from?

Users. That’s the only other entity, unless you can find a billionaire who wants to start a Reddit Trust to fund it forever.

So if Users are the Customers, you have to get money from them.

That’ll be fun to get them to go along with.

Ugliest site on the web, hands down. And that’s saying a lot.

Well, if they don’t get positive revenue, they won’t be a company and they won’t be providing any service, soon enough, will they?
