T-Mobile announces free global data roaming, texts

If you travel internationally, this is a game changer. Global roaming charges are outrageous. My hope is that this pushes other carriers to match T-Mobile.

Be careful and read the fine print! This seems to good to be true.

The fine print is below. What I don’t get is why they would bother charging for texts over Wi-Fi or how they could even collect on that. Certainly this could not apply to iMessage users? What a way to screw up an otherwise decent idea. Although 2G is not great it is better than nothing.

Simple Choice Plan international roaming rates Rate per minute: 20 cents Texting: Included** Data services: Included***

    • Rates are for calls within destination country and back to the US and from one qualifying country to another. ** Texts sent over Wi-Fi are 20 cents each. *** Included data at up to 2G speeds. High-speed data passes available for purchase.

Qualifying Simple Choice plan and capable device required. Rates are subject to change without notice. Airtime charges apply

“Over WiFi” is a T-Mobile feature. T-Mobile Android phones offer the option of WiFi calling and WiFi texting when on a compatible plan. It requires using special (terrible) T-Mobile software; iMessage wouldn’t be counted in that.

      • James Hughes

I see. That could be confusing. So you can use some other app and avoid the fees? Like WhatsApp for instance?

        • Colin Mattson

Yep. Anything else (WhatsApp, Kik, iMessage) is just data.

“WiFi Calling” and “WiFi Texting” (or “Calling over WiFi” and “Texting over WiFi”—they’re not even consistent) have to be turned on and then used via T-Mobile-modified system apps or T-Mobile-provided apps.

T-Mobile has good ideas, but their plans are incredibly confusing.
