J.K. Rowling to write “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” screenplay

Not quite a new Harry Potter story, but I’ll take it.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I predict big box office here.

Cue the outrage from fan-fiction “writers” who’d already laid claim to pre-Harry history.

Incredibly smart move by Ms. Rowling. She’s crafted this universe that people love to lose themselves in, and she’s clearly got no lack of imagination to continue to populate it. With motion picture technology they way it is, feature films can be in theatres a year after she finishes scripts. Why not continue to write stories as long as you want and let the artists and technicians turn them into box-office cash cows?!

A prequel is an incredibly safe route to go with making Harry Potter-related material. I think going forward would be far more interesting, as the general public becomes more aware of the wizards in their midst.
