Tumblr users flee to WordPress

Matt Mullenweg:

Imports have actually spiked on the rumors even though it’s Sunday: normally we import 400-600 posts an hour from Tumblr, last hour it was over 72,000.

I understand why people are worried — Yahoo has a terrible reputation for screwing things up, but I don’t think it will happen this time. Maybe I think too highly of Marissa Mayer, but I think Tumblr will be okay.

Also, the only real hit may be a PR one. Many regard those technorati as acceptable losses for mature platforms.

From my understanding, there are over 70 million blogs up on Tumblr, so a 0.1% migration isn’t necessary a big move. Of course, given the timing and the large lump based on the news probably just a knee jerk reaction.

But how many people use WP and Tumblr exclusively. I’m sure there’s a lot of individuals using either individually, I’d also suspect that there are WP sites that also cross post to Tumblr (as I do along with FB Page and Twitter).

How do we know people are “fleeing” and this isn’t just some vocal minority? Sounds like Mayer isn’t going to mess with Tumblr’s secret sauce. That whole article reads like a knee-jerk reaction, but so does his other work. meh

I would agree. This is not the Yahoo! of old that would acquire popular properties and let them collect dust. Marissa Mayer understands that Yahoo! needs to acquire and rebuild great properties with the intention of maintaining and continuing to improve the properties.

    run, you cowards.

This reminds me of all those times Google bought a nice service or entered a market and everyone stayed put because they were Google, and why worry? It’s not like they’d just shut it down all of a sudden or EOL the service without warning…

72,000 posts? This is nothing. Hell, this could be less than 100 actual Tumblr blogs.

Just wait until ICloudBlogs is announced.

And before anyone says it isn’t real you should know that my best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who got it from a reliable source who says its for real. It’s being released this year, or next or sometime
