Apple announces 50 billionth app winner

After passing the 50 billionth app downloaded yesterday, Apple on Thursday announced the winner of the download and the app that was downloaded.

According to Apple, the 50 billionth app was Say the Same Thing by Space Inch, LLC, which was downloaded by Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio. Brandon received a $10,000 App Store Gift Card for being the lucky downloader.

Apple said its customers are downloading more than 800 apps per second at a rate of over two billion apps per month on the App Store.

It’s important to note that Apple’s 50 billion app downloads are unique downloads — they do not count updates or re-downloads in those numbers.

The App Store offers more than 850,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 155 countries around the world, with more than 350,000 native iPad apps available.

I’m mostly assuming that Google Play numbers include updates because while their reaching 50 million.. and that shouldn’t be a big number considering the install-base… the sales numbers and browsing records show a relatively inactive install-base.

So when will the 50 other winners for the 500$ prize be announced? You would think they would be important also right? I know the big 50th app winner is the most of priority, but they must know the 50 others by now….

They probably have to contact everyone and get signed releases and such.

  • Stupid question I’ll never really need to know the answer to:

How do you fit $10,000 worth of apps onto one iOS device?

I figure it’s more like that person is set for life when it comes to app purchases, since the credit will apply to any device that uses the winning Apple ID. It also applies toward things like in-app purchases as well. I do wonder if it’s limited to just the app store or if it carries over to things like the iBookstore, iTunes store, Mac App store, etc. Anyone know how the gift cards work?

      • I wonder if the prize has an expiration date, too.
