Pixelmator 2.2 adds new shape, move, paint selection tools and lots more

The Pixelmator Team on Thursday released Pixelmator 2.2, a major update to their image editing software for OS X that’s now available for download from the Mac App Store. If you’re not currently a Pixelmator user, you can download a free trial from their Web site.

Pixelmator 2.2 – codenamed Blueberry prior to its launch – touts more than 100 new features, according to the developers, including a new Smart Shapes tool; Smart Move Tool, which adjusts depending on whether you’re working with image or shape layers; a new Paint Selection tool; Light Leak effect; Shapes and Shape Style palette and more.

It’s available for $14.99 for a limited time (half off).

I didn’t get a chance to update it yet but I hope the new quick selection tool allows me to properly isolate an individual or animal with hair and not take a couple of hours.

For me, the lack of Refine Edge has been the biggest issue with any Photoshop alternative. It’s even included with Elements despite its horrible UI.

  • I love Pixelmator. I can’t wait to get home and download the update.

  • Great timing on their part to get an update out right after Adobe announced Creative Cloud. A lot of people are starting to look for a Photoshop alternative and the extra press will do them well. I just do occasional minor editing and Pixelmator is perfect for my needs.

Someone needs to address alternate color spaces to RGB is there is going to be a Photoshop competitor. Although we love us some interweb, CMYK is still a major reason that Photoshop dominates the industry.

It would be great if there were more detailed tutorials somewhere for Pixelmator. Like, how to fill a shape with color.
