Amazon to compete with Apple TV

As it works to build all types of connected devices, that leaves a natural next step: a television set-top box. The e-commerce giant is planning to introduce a device this fall dedicated to streaming video over the Internet and into its customers’ living rooms.

This makes a lot of sense for Amazon and it would certainly be a bigger competitor than Google.

I’m not so sure it would be a huge competitor. Look how the Kindle Fire turned out.

      Different ball game.

Hmm, does this mean Amazon Instant Video is not coming to the Apple TV?

Amazon has an iPad competitor, yet has Amazon Instant Video for iPad. I think Amazon Instant Video making it onto the AppleTV is more up to Apple at this point.

In other news, Google and Amazon to compete with everything Apple does.

I think you should finish that comment with in North America. Elsewhere they wouldn’t be as competitive.

I wonder if they’ll fork Google TV’s code.

    Amazon Instant Video

is already available in iPad, Roku, Smart TVs, Xbox, PS3, Wii U.

So what exactly Amazon offer that will be different.

The ability to maybe make some slim margins off of their own eco-system player instead of just being an App/Channel on Roku.

My only other thought is, Does Roku allow user to play Amazon Android Apps?

the more interesting thing would be

Shopping. But that requires some kind of browser navigation on your TV.

If it was easy Apple would have already put in appleTV.

Umm…not necessarily. Apple doesn’t do it just ’cause it is easy. They do things when it is right.

Navigation isn’t an issue though. They could do a Roku or Vizio Co-Star style remote.

We … I can already navigate my Apple TV with my iPhone or iPad. The onscreen keyboard makes for very easy navigation, especially for perusing the iTunes Store for movies and music. Amazon may be looking to tie the Kindle into the Amazon Store app.

I don’t see an Amazon box being a bigger competitor than Google. YouTube is a much bigger name than Amazon Video. If it was Netflix I could see it.

    • Khürt Williams

Google is not a consumer products company. Amazon is. The best selling Android OS based tablet is the Kindle Fire. Neither Google nor Samsung have been able to crack that market. I already have YouTube on my Apple TV and TiVO. I rarely use it.

      • Tvaddic

Google doesn’t have to make the box they just have to try to make it a hit. YouTube, GMail. Android and Fiber are things they are really trying on. And just because you rarely use YouTube doesn’t mean other people don’t. It is the number 3 website in the world with a billion users.

I realize that this is an Apple’centric site, but don’t forget Roku, Western Digital, Xbox 360, Boxee, etc…
