Bleszinski: Video game industry in “massive state of turmoil”

“This business has not been in a state of transition like it is right now since the video game crash of the ’80s,” Bleszinski said. “I really think we’re in a massive state of turmoil.”

Cliff Bleszinski is formerly the design director for Epic Games. He’s been influential in the design and development of the Unreal franchise as well as Gears of War.

He’s right. The ubiquity of powerful hardware in peoples’ pockets is seriously disrupting the status quo, and that power curve is accelerating faster than hardware game consoles can be designed and released. I don’t think anyone knows what will happen next, other than the end of selling games (or anything else really) on physical discs…

By “turmoil” he means “progress.” The game industry is used to doing the same thing for 10 years at a time. Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5x as many iOS devices as game consoles means you have to change. They are lucky to have a platform like iOS to move to, with proper 3D development and in-app purchases and $329 10 hour battery devices.
