Stupid Xbox Posted on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013 at 2:03 pm. PTWritten by Jim Dalrymple Nat Brown, one of the founders of the Xbox project, rails on Microsoft. Will “xBox’s secondary critical problem is that the device OS and almost the entire user experience outside the first two levels of the dashboard are creaky, slow, and full-of-shit.”This is so true. I’ve had a 360 since launch and the state of it right now is truly appalling, it’s got worse and worse. The examples he quotes are just the tip of the iceberg. The console the Xbox has become and the path it’s heading down is a very sketchy road.. I personally don’t play it anywhere near as much as I used to and I know a lot of friends who are, whether coincidentally or not, in the exact same boat. Mandatory ads all over an already clunky and badly thought out OS doesn’t make the 360 a console that’s attractive to naturally want to turn on any more. And the worst thing is it used to be the opposite of that, the original “blades” dashboard was the most beautiful and seamless OS. It was a truly original design that was so simple, fast and clean, as well as being extremely functional and a joy to use.Today, the OS we have is essentially a mod of the Windows 8 design; only with most of the tiles forced as compulsory adverts, almost no matter what screen you’re on. Can you imagine the uproar if Apple decided that 3 squares of iOS were going to be become permanent unremovable ads, the world would go absolutely apeshit. And then recently, despite how hated they are, we get Microsoft declaring that they consider them a success, presumably due to revenue, and we’re going to see even more of them..When the 360 was first released with the blades and Xbox Live and HD it felt like a huge step forward. The lead designer said he was inspired by Apple and the harmony between the hardware and software, he’s been quoted as saying he wanted the “whole user experience to be consistent, like an Apple product.” And you could see it. Everything about the UI and system was smart and original, genius even.Everyone I knew had one or wanted one, and it deserved that because it was a great console. Now three UIs later we have a junk filled, commercial infested, Windows 8-style Kinect fuck up of a console with Mii clones. That sounds almost way over the top but it’s all true. What worries me is that the next console is going to be some Windows 8-style Kinect-centric thing and it’s going to piss on everything Xbox could have been if the creative people were given the control. Pdsn this is good!
