Stuart freeborn, Yoda’s creator, passes away

Stuart Freeborn, the British pioneering movie makeup artist behind creatures such as Yoda and Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died. He was 98.

Freeborn’s career also included work with Stanley Kubrick that yielded the memorable ape-men from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the many different faces of Peter Sellers’ characters in “Doctor Strangelove.”

  • Freeborn, like Dick Smith, was kind of amazing. A lot of his work was so good, audiences couldn’t exactly tell it was fabrication.

Is it just an anecdote that the Oscar committee gave the award for best makeup effects to “Planet of the Apes” because they couldn’t tell the australopithecines in “2001” were dancers in man-ape suits?

    Peace may he rest in.
