Sony sells Manhattan headquarters

Sony admitted that the motivation for the sale was to raise much-needed cash, expected to equal $770m, after debts on the building have been repaid.

They are renting the building back. Sounds a lot like what cash-strapped Nokia is being forced to do.

  • I remember the last couple of times I visited that showroom. It seemed a bit like a throwback to an era where a sole company could devote a relatively enormous amount of display space towards product that might not generate very many sales.

The upstairs was mostly about portables and accessories. The downstairs gallery was set up to show off monitors and optical players. I used one setup to test a home-burned DVD. There were still a few CRTs back then. I wonder how many were still actually assembled by Sony.
