Stanley Kubrick’s letter about HAL and IBM Posted on Friday, January 4th, 2013 at 11:30 am. PT Written by Jim Dalrymple Kubrick: Does I. B. M. know that one of the main themes of the story is a psychotic computer? jmyjazz I once asked Arthur C Clarke about this myself and he denied it completely. It was without doubt one of the weirdest phone calls I’ve ever had. http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Crellen/100000963154922 David Crellen The letters ‘H’, ‘A’, ‘L’ are one less on the alphabet as ‘I’, ‘B’, ‘M’, ie, I -1 = H, B -1 = A, M -1 = L. Was that not coincidental? http://www.aichon.com/ Brad Kubrick and Clark, as the article states, repeatedly claimed that it was coincidental, and considering the existence of this letter in which Kubrick is clearly concerned with damaging IBM’s image, I’m inclined to believe their claims.
