    I once asked Arthur C Clarke about this myself and he denied it completely. It was without doubt one of the weirdest phone calls I’ve ever had.

    The letters ‘H’, ‘A’, ‘L’ are one less on the alphabet as ‘I’, ‘B’, ‘M’, ie, I -1 = H, B -1 = A, M -1 = L.

    Was that not coincidental?

      Kubrick and Clark, as the article states, repeatedly claimed that it was coincidental, and considering the existence of this letter in which Kubrick is clearly concerned with damaging IBM’s image, I’m inclined to believe their claims.
