Apple sells more than 2 million iPhone 5 in China in three days

Apple began selling the new iPhone 5 in China on Friday and according to numbers released tonight, more than 2 million were sold over the first weekend.

“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”

These numbers clearly put to rest speculation by analyst Steven Milunovich who said “some of our Chinese sources do not expect the iPhone 5 to do as well as the iPhone 4S.”

Milunovich needs new sources.

I just watched “Steve Jobs: Lost Interview”, and he said his intention for Apple was to infuse the “liberal arts” into its products as much as possible. He wanted to “bring the race up” via providing it with really good products. Case in point is the iPhone 5. This is evidence that a lot of Chinese “get it” and Apple products strike an emotional chord with them, too.

Next for us is an iPhone 5, an iPad Mini, and either a 27″ tricked out iMac, or perhaps a new American-made Mac Pro–if I can wait that long!

So much for weak demand. I suppose you could spin it and say that only .2% of China’s population bought an iPhone 5.

A lot of people need new sources, not just Milunovich…

Many in the ignorant media were quick to echo the short queues while overlooking the real cause of the short queues – the reservation system introduced to stop the scuffles.

The shadier and in this case more innacurate sources tend to make better headlines.

Is 2 million a lot for China’s population that can afford a high end smart phone purchase? ie is China’s high end smart phone buying population larger or smaller then america’s?

    • http://sharonsharalike.com/ Sharon Sharalike

Millions of China’s high end smart phone buying population already have iPhone 5′s, brought in from places like Hong Kong. The real money didn’t wait for the official release. Considering that, more than 2 million this weekend is a staggering number.

during iphone 5 initial launch weekend, Apple sold 5mm in 9 countries, 2mm in China alone is huge!

    • AdamChew

Why don’t you question Samsung how many high end smart phones they sold for the past 3 months and is that high for China’s population?

  • beidaren

The UBS guy’s source must be China Mobile Executives who were hoping its rivals China Unicom and China Telecom won’t steal too many customers away.

    • AdamChew

I am sure the source is Kass the short.

Wait. Now we are talking about analysts.

  • dr.no

Ya but if it had been 3 million. Apple would force to introduce iphone 6 in China first. Tell that to Cook.

  • TeeJay2000

Sources? Milunovich asked 2 guys who work in the Samsung mailroom.

Well, now the Citigroup DOWNGRADED Apple to neutral, the drop will be 200 points, not 100. Every Tom, Dick andHarry will be selling IN THE MORNING.

And finally…. Months and months of lies and garbage throwing upon Apple will be now washed away by the truth: No machine out there is comparable to an iPhone 5 (or even a 4/4s) and the chinese sales numbers are here to demonstrate it once and once and once again.. P.S. greetings to famous analyst Steve Milunovich who is now officially declared: the new Ed Zabitsky…
