WordPress or MODX?

A good article for those considering a CMS tool. I’ve thought for a while now that WordPress is getting too big to be a simple blogging tool. I’ve been wondering about the benefits of Movable Type, a tool that I used many years ago. After all, MT does power Daring Fireball and Kottke.org.

I tried Movable Type, then switched to WordPress. Seemingly simple things like posting a video or photo gallery (one I liked, anyway) seemed far too much work. WordPress seems to be better supported for plugins too.

What about using something like Jeckyll or Pelican? With such a simple site you may be better off without the overhead of a DB and just using plaintext/markdown -> static pages. It’s not too complicated, and whatever additional little upfront work for customization would be required should be made up on the back end by using far less server power.
