Gosh…I was a kid in Sydney…still remember the paper headlines “Beatles land in Aus”, but never realized that Ringo wasn’t with them! Thanks for sharing :)

I believe Nicol was mentioned in Hunter Davies’ book, as well as one or two documentaries I’ve seen.

BTW, they probably could have stuck anyone in there. No one could hear The Beatles in their early concerts due to weak sound systems and non-stop screaming of the fans.

They mention this tour and Jimmy subbing in for Ringo in “The Beatles Anthology” documentary DVD set, which is phenomenal. It’s the greatest rock and roll documentary that exists (for the greatest rock and roll band). If you haven’t seen this entire thing, I highly suggest (nay, demand!) that you go rent or buy the DVD set and watch the entire 10 hours of it. The best thing about the documentary is that it’s mostly told through interviews from the surviving Beatles (at the time), and clips of John. So it’s all from the “horses mouth”. I wish they’d Blu-Ray this thing, But so far there’s no word of that happening. (or if they even could since it was originally shot for TV in the 90s)

(Another incredible rock doc to see is, “Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who”)
