Apple announces special event for Oct. 23

Apple on Tuesday announced a special event to be held on October 23, 2012 in San Jose. The event is scheduled to take place at 10:00 am PT.

Unlike other recent events that have been held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Apple will hold this event at the California Theatre in San Jose .

It is widely expected that Apple will use this event to unveil a smaller form-factor iPad.

  • 🙂

  • How do you always get these invites before anybody?!

    • adrianoconnor

Because Jim secretly runs the whole Apple show. He’s like Madame Lafarge, but with a bigger beard.

      • deviladv

That and he has a 4G wireless access point in hidden his beard with a VPN direct to Apple so they can reach him at any time instantaneously. I hear he has treats for his sled dogs hidden in his beard too.

        • I heard that if you ever run out of Heineken, you need only tap his veins.

    • Andrew

I bet when he gets an email from Apple he gets sent SMS messages and notifications and sees it instantly.

  • Damien D’Amore

    nice. 🙂

  • adrianoconnor

Rumors are saying $249 for 8GB model, $349 for 16GB. Certainly sounds plausible. I expected the entry model to be 16GB for 349, but like Gruber said on his show, they use the cheap ‘base’ model to get people interested, and then let the customer talk themselves in to buying the next model up…

And I love that Apple are doing this the same week that Microsoft release Windows 8 and Surface 🙂

    • Par for the course. They’ve done it before. Kudos to their strategists.

    • Sharon_Sharalike

I can’t believe even Apple would have the nerve to charge 40% more for merely an extra 8GB. Either the 16GB model includes something else as well, or maybe those rumors are not right.

      • I thought you were incorrect at first but you’re right. The new iPad goes $499 (16), $599 (32), and $699 (64).

        Great point.

        • These are SSDs, they’re much more expensive than a traditional hard disk drive.

          • I don’t see it on the tech specs but will take your word on it.

            Great point.

          • It’s a ‘flash drive’, which is basically an SSD. A touch interface would not run on a hard drive

          • Scruff0

Of course it would. Touch drives the interface, ssd/hard drive is the storage. There is nothing in common between the two. You can have a touch interface without an SSD (see 10 years of Windows tablets with hard drives) – the main reasons for SSD in tiny devices is size and durability against shocks.

    • Smaller size does count in this case.

  • YEAH!

  • 😉

  • B

Nice …. this will be the holiday gift of the year for kids for sure.

  • I love Apple and bleed six colors, but with the iPhone 5 and the new iPad, I have no interest in a third device.

    • tylernol

some people will be fine with the iPad, some people will be fine with the mini/air. Most will not get both.

      • Adriano Geletes

        I will 😉

    • KSS

iPad Mini is not for you. It is a gateway drug/device for the uninitiated.

  • tylernol

apparently 24 different part numbers? 4 memory sizes(8,16,32,64?) Two colors(same as iphone 5) ? That leaves three variations in the good/better/best category. Perhaps wifi only/non-retina, wifi only/retina, and wifi/LTE/retina? So if the wifi only model is non-retina, Apple can cheap out on the SOC, and bring the price down to the $200 range.

    • Myriad

I think no retina option, but 4 memory sizes x 3 colors x 2 options (Wifi only vs. 3G+LTE)

    • 9to5Mac’s interpretation, which seems very plausible, is that it’s 12 iPad Mini’s and 12 updated big-boy iPads (with IGZO, Lightning, international LTE).

      • Myriad

12 for the iPad mini? Which memory sizes will only have Wifi then? I don’t think that would be wise.

        • Something like: MIni: {White, Black} x {WiFi, LTE} x {8GB, 16GB, 32GB) 10″: {White, Black} x {WiFi, LTE} x {16GB, 32GB, 64GB)

I’m assuming they’ve got enough space that they can include the necessary hardware for US + World LTE/GSM/CDMA in one device

          • Myriad

I think you’re right! This would make sense.

      • tylernol

that’s true — perhaps half are the updated iPad 10″ models.

    • There will not be any retina mini ipads. The 1024 by 768 format (XGA) will work very well on a small display.

      • tylernol

well that would certainly make it easier for developers to target since it matches the iPad 2 display resolution.

      • tylernol

but what about 1280×720/16:9 ? I wonder if it will go to that. Higher DPI, still not retina. But perfect for viewing 16:9 HD movies with no wasted letterboxing.

  • gjgustav

    13″ Retina MBP, please.

  • Adriano Geletes

My interpretation of the invite is: The iPad Air/Mini comes in 6 different color or it doesn’t have a Retina display.

    • adrianoconnor

My interpretation of the invite: just small iPads, no iMacs 🙁

  • Myriad

Say 8Gb, how much of it will be free out of the box?

  • Darobick

    Apple TV app store please

  • Yen Ping Chai

    damn, i just bought a 13″ MBP

    • KSS

You can return within 14 days of purchase.

    • sunny

Every year by October Apple will bring new products or re-design (for slick and smaller) their existing ones….for holiday season….

  • Christopher Sanders

    I need a 13″ retina display MBA

  • bobwash

nice to see the six colors come back. Bob, early Apple sales manager

  • bobrk

Some of the early announcements were at the California Theater. I wish I had an invite, it’s in my neighborhood!

  • i am first in line

  • Boo

Sweet. Hope they release a new Mac Mini, too. Mine is getting a little long in the tooth.

I’ll be picking up an iPad Mini too. My first iOS device and it will be a lot more suited to my needs. I was actually considering a Kindle Fire before it seemed likely that Apple would release a smaller iPad.

  • Grizz

Hey Apple, no one cares about your events to announce already old ideas and technology. Just post it on your website and save yourself the cost of renting a theatre. Glitz and glam do not equate to a quality product.

    • And by “no one” you mean only several million.

      Got it.

    • matthewmaurice

Sounds like Grizz is a little (or a lot) bitter.

    • “no one cares about your events…”

      I don’t think I’ve seen a more wrong sentence written today…

    • Always nice to see the kids from TechCrunch posting here.

  • How about a Mac Mini with a retina display.

    • adrianoconnor

How about a Mac Pro with a lighning dock?

      • How about a new iMac, with… well, just a new iMac.

  • Am I the only one who thinks this particular cropping of the logo looks like a butt? I hope Tim Cook isn’t going to show us his butt.

Also, my take on the 24 skus: multiple colors.

  • W_

A smaller iPad, a smaller Retina Pro. hmmm…

  • GoodinfO

The more interesting question is will the iMacs bring support for AMD Radeon 7xxx cards or will they stick with Nvidia’s 6xx Kepler?

  • Oladapo

I say 13″ Retina MBP, and an iPad Mini with a retina display on the first run.

    • A mini with retina display would be a new formfactor for developers, and require apps to be redesigned.

A mini with a non-retina display, however, would work at the iPad 1 resolution ,and apps would run fine as is.

      • 75th

That makes no sense whatsoever. A non-Retina iPad Mini would have the same resolution as the iPad 1 and 2, and run apps the same way. A Retina iPad Mini would have the same resolution as the Retina iPad 3, and run apps the same way. Why would one be the same as the existing models and the other be different?

  • Scruff0

  • NeoThunder

it’s a waste of time and money for anyone to buy an 8 gig iPad. You would have it filled up in no time with the size that apps take up

  • Crow

I will invent iShit with Retina with 8g for morons :))

  • I will order 2 new iPad Mini’s, or Airs as soon as they are available. Bring em on!

The price point of the iPad mini will be interesting. Will Apple try and compete with Google and Amazon or will they use their brand loyalty to make money from hardware sales but risk losing people to the iOS ecosystem?

  • little iPad

  • Just-ed

I’d venture a guess that we will see the rumored Apple HDTV set at this event. This is based on their adding “show” to the tagline and that the invitation sorta looks like the old tv test pattern. Also the venue… a theater. Tie it in to movie streaming and other services or make the philosophical connection to home theaters. The California Theater’s schedule page shows the event name as “Annatto Productions”. Perhaps Annatto was an internal codename? There is no information online about Annatto productions according to google searches. I’d argue that the iPad mini could function as the remote for the TV.

    • “I’d venture a guess that we will see the rumored Apple HDTV set at this event.”

BTW, the venue is so Apple can invite more people. They’ve used it in the past. Not all that unusual a location.

    • Sunny

      Apple HDTV …yes.

  • That logo is pretty disgusting if you turn it upside down.

    • LMBO! I couldn’t picture it so had to go geek.

      If you’re in Chrome or Safari, right click and inspect the element. Under “{}” paste this in: -webkit-transform:rotate(180deg);

  • marvin

    iCamera would be nice. 😀
