Verizon responds to data usage concerns on iPhone 5 while connected to Wi-Fi

Verizon on Monday responded to concerns from customers about their iPhone 5 using data while connected to a Wi-Fi network.

“Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network,” Verizon said in a statement provided to The Loop. “Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.”

The fix is available by going to Settings > General > About on the iPhone 5 and waiting for a message to appear. Then you just tap “Okay” to update. Full instructions are available on Apple’s Web site.

This update should remedy any problems iPhone 5 customers have had with data usage on their Verizon devices.

    I was hit by this and have used 1.3GB in a 4 days despite being careful and using mostly WiFi. I called Verizon around 2pm EST (relatively late in the day), and the customer service person told me that “your data usage is your data usage”, “there is no bug, or someone in this building would have heard about it”, and when I mentioned it was on the website of every major news source including CNN, she said “the media can print anything, don’t believe everything you read”. Wow! I kept my patience but was blow away. I called back and the 2nd person was MUCH more helpful – she is going to monitor my usage for the rest of the month and credit at the end of the month if my usage is “reasonable”.

    I had the same problem with the data usage. I was told by Verizon that they would monitor mine as well. I am glad that Verizon and Apple finally realized there was a problem and hopefully this will fix it.
