Amazon will allow users to opt-out of ads on Kindle

If you’ve been put off by the (arguably obtrusive) Special Offers on the Kindle Fire HD, Amazon has just announced that they will allow users to pay $15 to opt-out of the ads for the life of the device.

In other words, you must effectively pay $15 for an app to remove crap from your own device put there by the device maker.

Thank god. I don’t mind ads all that much in principle, but you either give me ads or I pay you, no combination of the two.

I’m okay with this. It allows people to get a cheaper device and keep the ads which may not be a big deal to them while giving the others an option to opt out if they find the ads obtrusive. I have a new iPad so I won’t be buying a Kindle Fire but, I welcome the competition to keep the whole catagory moving forward.

Holy crap, the margin on those things must be REALLY tight if Amazon is prepared to give customers a shit user experience in return for a mere $15.

Bingo. Just like crapware on cheap Windows PCs.
