A Samsung iPhone

Ilya Birman sent this to me today. It’s a sign in Russian, but translated. Clearly people aren’t confused about things. Definitely not.

Could it be iPhone is the new ubiquitous name for a product group a la Kleenex and Xerox? (On the attempted humor side, Krapper would be in this group many years back).

We have iPhones not Smart Phones and certainly not flavor of the month names like SI/II/III/Note1/Note2. “I can dig it,” Miles Davis 1968.

      My thought exactly.

In the south of the US if you ask for a coke, they hand you any type of soda if you don’t tell them to hand you a coca cola.

It’s most likely a neologism in Russia just like “Handy” is German for “cell phone”.

This comparing of things is really getting silly. It starts to feel like sitting in a circus with the clowns coming out of the small car.

Thanks for your agreement and I appreciate your comments on coca cola and “Handy”! I like to learn new words and phrases from around the country and around the globe.

It won’t be a generic term if Apple keeps up their fight

Thanks for your response. I have to admit though it went over my head. Please explain your comment, “It won’t be a generic term if Apple keeps up their fight.”
