Acer begs Microsoft to rethink Surface tablet

Acer CEO JT Wang:

“We have said think it over. Think twice,” Wang is quoted as saying. “It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction. It is not something you are good at so please think twice.”

There’s trouble in them there hills.

Of course the simple solution is for Acer to build a better tablet than the Surface.

Between this, the questionable dual-format/dual-OS concept, the legal issue over the “Metro” name and Apple’s apparent prior patent on the soft-keyboard-as-cover design, Microsoft’s latest vapor product has a rocky road ahead.

Acer should be happy about the surface. They can’t compete against a great tablet (the iPad), but they’ll surely be able to beat a (currently) non-existant but future (the Surface) crappy one.

The Surface isn’t a tablet. It’s a couple of prototypes of a tablet that might or might not ever see a retail shelf. And if Ballmer actually did tell OEMs that it’s merely a demonstration of capabilities, then gadget kiddies really need to stop talking about it as though they’ll ever own one.

JT is right, hardware isn’t something Microsoft is good at. However, the problem for both Acer and Microsoft is that Acer doesn’t seem particularly good at it either.

Saying Microsoft is no good at hardware is really the pot calling the kettle black. Every Acer device I’ve ever touched has been total garbage.

Gruber is right, too. Where is Acer going to go? Linux? Android?

It’s “them thar hills,” boy! Who done learned you to talk like that?
