Keeping your mouth shut

Fred Wilson:

The Yahoo! board went out and got Marissa to join the company. And they kept their mouths shut in the process and the news surprised everyone. That’s how you run a company, a board, and a process. Well done.

Agreed, Yahoo did a good job with that one. Now let’s see what Marissa can do.

I can hope for the best. It would be great for Google to have a competent competitor on their hands and I would think that Yahoo! might be just the “blank slate save us we are sinking” place to start doing that from.

I was listening to this story on Marketplace yesterday and found myself thinking “What does Yahoo even do any more?” I know I get a lot of spam from friends whose Yahoo email accounts have been hacked into. Other than that, I can’t think of anything. I guess they want to be an ad sales company like Google, but they have to provide a service that people want to use in order to sell ads.

Flickr, basically. That’s the Yahoo property that people still use.
