RIM’s positive outlook could get it sued

“They’re going to get sued and they should get sued because I think a closer look at the record is likely to unearth knowing and willful misrepresentation,” said Jean-Louis Gassée, the former president of Apple’s products division and the founder of the software maker Be, who is now a venture capitalist and blogger in Palo Alto, Calif. “When the C.E.O. says there’s nothing wrong with the company as it is, it’s not cautious, it doesn’t make sense.”

I’m beginning to believe that RIM doesn’t even exist, and this is all just a sick joke being played on the entire world by people at Google with too much time on their hands!

Well, the same thing was said about Apple in the mid-nineties, they were in an even more dire situation profitwise. They survived and later prospered, which a freakin’ miracle. A company can be turned around, it’s just that it isn’t easy.

Now it’s just a race against time and money – RIM needs to release a new generation of their products before they run out of cash. And the new products need to be good, not just good enough. They at least will have a chance to move their old user-base to the new platform, which could be considered a success. I personally think it’s good that they moved the release date from fall of 2012 to the beginning of 2013 – if they feel like they need time, they should have it – RIM can’t afford another PlayBook-like disaster of a launch.

They could run into problems with cash, and the best option will be to sell some of their patent portfolio to the company with the most cash in this market, i.e. Apple. Considering this, RIM can survive, it’s just that in the short-term they won’t be a superstar player in the market, that they once were.

My quick reaction to Mr Heins recent remarks was something like “I take it that shareholder suits are different in Canada.”
