Christianity isn’t the only religion?

It’s an honest mistake, assuming that the Constitution only protects your own personal megachurch faith. But one Louisiana Republican is learning the hard way that religious school vouchers can be used to fund education at all sorts of religious schools, even Muslim ones. And while she’s totally in favor of taxpayer money being used to pay for kids to go to Christian schools, she’s willing to put a stop to the entire program if Muslim schools are going to be involved.

Religion can be an amazing force for good, but it has never been free of grifters, hypocrites, con artists, and outright felons who capitalize on the vulnerability of deep faith.

      So very true.

Religion should have never been an issue in this either way. States should be setting up vouchers, tax cuts whatever simply on the notion that why should I be forced to fund a school I’m not putting my kids in. If I choose to send to them to a ‘religious’ school, a non religious private funded school or to home school them should all be treated the same.

Separate issue. You and I fund public schools so that kids whose parents can’t afford private schooling have a chance of growing up to be citizens either of us can stand to live amongst.

Unless you enjoy complaining about the fact that your checkout clerk can’t do arithmetic. Or unless you can afford to live in a completely gated community, far away from the population you rely upon for a shrinking tax base to fund services you still rely upon.

Religion — specifically modern American fundamentalist Christianity — is inextricably mixed with this issue because a good, well-funded public education system is very threatening to certain politicians who’d rather have docile, ignorant, and obedient voters on their side, not to mention lobbyists for the more profitable megachurches.
