Avid sells its consumer audio and video products

Avid has agreed to sell its consumer audio and video product lines. The company’s consumer audio products are being sold to inMusic, the parent company of Akai Professional, Alesis and Numark, among others.

The products involved in this transaction include M-Audio brand keyboards, controllers, interfaces, speakers and digital DJ equipment and other product lines. Avid will continue to develop and sell its industry-leading Pro Tools line of software and hardware, as well as associated I/O devices including Mbox and Fast Track.

Separately, the company’s consumer video editing line is being sold to Corel Corporation.

Tough times.

The problem is that Avid is making a distinction between consumers and professionals. Avid should only make one audio mixing program, and one video editing program.

Didn’t even know Corel was still around ;)

It’s not just you. Corel’s not sure they’re still around either.

I never thought M-Audio was a good fit for Avid. They’re even worse for inMusic. The M-Audio and Alesis keyboard lines overlap almost completely. Did inMusic buy them just to shut down the competition?

Why are you jumping to the conclusion that it’s tough times? By the sounds of it, Avid are sharpening their focus, something Apple has proven to be a successful strategy over the years.

Avid have always been a pro market company at their core. As much as I never liked their platform for NLE, as a professional editor I respect the fact that they’re choosing to focus their attention there and set the toys aside.
