The Google Nexus

Here it is.

    My order is in.

I am still trying to determine why the Nexus Q is worth $200 more than other players, mainly the Apple TV. With the exception of the built-in 25-watt amp, the only real difference is Google Play integration.

Same. It is pricey but I ordered one of those too. I have a great need to integrate with it on an app. If I can, it’d be killer.

Well, the AppleTV can be used on its own and the Nexus Q requires an Android phone or tablet…

I’ve forgotten where I was going with this.

See Google TV for Apple TV competitor.

Seemingly Q + GTV = Apple TV, somewhat.

Well, it’s going to murder Kindle Fire. The web streamer is ugly as sin; I thought boxee was bad…

I’m going to file this in my “WTF?” folder. Or perhaps, the “WHY?” folder would be more appropriate.

The Q or the Nexus or both?

      • http://www.thegraphicmac.com/ JimD

        I’m heavily leaning toward both.

I’m with you on the Q. Seems like it was “close” to be a hot new product but the “Why?” is still there.

The Nexus 7 is obvious. 7″ $199 tablet will prob fly off the shelves and is a pure Google device with remarkable hardware. It’ll prob be the best 7″ tablet around, bar none.

Well…it does have to compete with Jim’s beloved HTC Note. :-/

Google’s aggressive pricing is impressive. Granted, you have to compensate people somehow for the pathetic state of Android’s tablet ecosystem, but the Nexus 7 going toe-to-toe with the Kindle Fire is bold. Maybe it’ll be just the kick in the pants that’s needed.

The Nexus Q, on the other hand, is just baffling. Weird shape, weird price point, tacky connector locations, bizarre rolling-on-e light show feature… and is “social” (which seems to amount to nothing more than a party playlist mode) really a thing people have been asking for?

    iPad killer?

    • http://www.johncblandii.com John C. Bland II

Nothing is. Only Apple can kill it.

I actually love the shape of the Q. We need more interesting things to show off in the living room; it’s why I liked the sinking box look of the Boxee. But $299 is really steep when you have Roku and AppleTV out there doing mostly the same stuff. Or you can spend the same on a XBox or PS3 and get media and gaming capabilities right in one hub device.

(Come on, Apple, open the AppleTV to apps/channels!)
