Google to launch cloud services platform

Om Malik:

Google is very likely to launch a cloud services platform at its annual developer conference, Google I/O next week in San Francisco. It was one of the topics of discussion in the hallways of our Structure 2012 conference. We have since confirmed with multiple sources who are familiar with Google’s plans which include a more comprehensive offering that its current app engine and storage offerings.

This will be very interesting.

Let’s see, it’ll try to copy features of the iCloud?

This sounds like a IaaS platform, which is a completely different service than iCloud.

to some degree yes. But that is in part because iCloud was just a copy of certain common features for a ‘cloud service’. Even Yahoo, AOL etc sync contacts and such.

And Google already has that kind of syncing via gmail, especially if you use Exchange set up. They own picasa and they have their Google Drive. All together they have the makings for something more like the original MobileMe than iCloud which might be a good thing. Especially if it’s reasonably priced, secure and efficient

This is for renting server instances from Google similar to Amazon EC2. Not sure how that’s related to MobileMe either?
