Kodak sues Apple over patent sales

Jonathan Stempel for Reuters:

Photography pioneer Eastman Kodak Co sued Apple Inc to stop it from interfering with plans to sell a large patent portfolio, a significant part of its bankruptcy restructuring.

Kodak announced plans in February to phase out of the consumer camera business. As part of its massive bankruptcy restructuring, the company sought to sell digital imaging patents. Apple tried to sue Kodak to stop the sale of those patents, but a judge blocked their attempt.

If Apple can back up their claims that they, not Kodak, first create the tech in question and Kodak ‘got it’ by way if this partnership etc then they will just turn around and sue whomever buys the patents in question. Anyone looking to buy the portfolio should be advise that there’s legal contention around some of the items so they can make an informed decision.

Who knows, some buyer might see value in the rest of the portfolio without those patents and buy based on that value and then turn around and hand the ones in contention back over to Apple. Although something tells me that it is the 10 that Apple has made the claim on that are the real value items which is why Kodak isn’t giving them up.
