GODDAMNIT DELL SHUTUP

Dell’s Australian managing director Joe Kremer talking about the iPad:

“People might be attracted to some of these shiny devices but technology departments can’t afford to support them,” he told a media and analyst briefing in Sydney. “If you are giving a presentation and something fails on the software side it might take four days to get it up and running again. I don’t think this race has been run yet.”

Listen up Joe. You’re talking about using an iPad, not one of your shitty Dell computers. You shouldn’t talk about things you have no idea about. You just look stupid.

You look stupid Joe.

Why would it take 4 days? I can reboot the iPad and restart the app in 30 seconds.

    • lucascott

Not everyone can be fixed by a reboot. Course even if you have to do a full restore and reload you’d have to have a computer for that and most presentations are just keynote/powerpoint and you can run it off the computer. Unless you are dell who are too dumb to have a contingency plan like having a laptop and having the proper software on it.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure it truly would occupy the Dell IT department for a full four days to cure an iPad from a presentation malfunction.

  • D Pauw

Man, I hate it when the software on my iPad gives me a stroke and I lose four days. Wonder how often that happens to Dell seeing as how they seem to be stuck in 2002.

  • DBiedny

The stupidity coming out of his mouth is a mask for desperation, they’re yesterday’s stale toast and they KNOW it.

    • lucascott

Me thinks they are too stupid to know how stupid and ‘done’ they are.

Then again as I recall this guy is from the Australian division and perhaps over there they don’t have the vast network of 3rd party shops with replacements parts that might be a 5-10 minute drive from your office. And if you are doing a presentation in the middle of the Outback you probably don’t have a radio so you have to send your bush plane hours out to a town where you can ship the busted part back to the home office to have it swapped and then they send it back out to you. So that could be 4 days

that is if you aren’t smart enough to carry two units cause you know you are out in the middle of no where.

He needs to brush up on his Hindu if he needs quick repairs.

I think Joe is missing the point.

Powerful “consumer” devices, such as the iPad don’t -require- a centralized IT organization to: 1) log a ticket in the global IT help desk system 2) try to get level 1 support in a low-cost foreign location to try to solve the problem and fail (yet still respond within their ever-loving SLA). 3) finally get a level 2 person who speaks your language, and who has actually used an iPad to answer your question (3 days later).

It is not that different from the initial PC revolution, when individuals brought computers in to their organization because the “MIS” department couldn’t get to the spreadsheet analysis for 3 months.

It isn’t so much the piece of technology, it is how it is used, and how much institutional support is required/foisted upon the end-user.

The only way i can come up with 4 days is where there is some kind of requirement by the company for it to be sent in to a central location if the firmware needs to be udpated and they don’t overnight it in.

I have seen companies with this policy but it was for any supported device — laptop or ipad, and the laptops are significantly harder to rebuild if you have to change drivers around to fix the problem.

Worst case reinstalling an iPad firmware should be: done via remote by having user plug into a computer that support then remotes and go through the process. Very difficult to do with a laptop, even when a nearby computer is available.

Heck, if an iPad is smashed, even if you aren’t using iCloud backups you can get a new iPad and restore it with all apps in a day. If you use iCloud backups you get your data back too.

As usual Dell just reveals themselves to be complete morons.

It sounds like sale bs from a salesman to an unknowning customer-

  • Carlos

What the hell is he talking about?

    • http://bobmartens.net/ Bob Martens

He doesn’t have the foggiest idea.

Posts like this are why I like Jim.

Yeah, I hate when I have to reinstall the OS and all the device drivers on my iPad because of a software failure. I can’t tell you how many days of productivity I’ve lost because of that. I’m eagerly awaiting the day when the brilliant designers and engineers at Dell will save me from this drudgery.

Sure, doc. I’m ready for my morning meds. Lemme just finish this game of Connect Four.

  • imthedude

I don’t even know what he’s trying to say, but we have about 20 iPads at my work place. The things I have to do the least support on? The iPads. The things that give me the most problems? Anything with a Dell tag on it. (Desktops, printers, laptops…) Hell they even shipped 2 laptops with the same broken fan part.

  • lucascott

Dell totally should not shut up. They need to keep this up a lot.

Why? Because it just shows how much they don’t have a clue. And people that might be thinking about doing business with them, especially for business, need to know how stupid and clueless they are.

So bring it on Joe, tell us more.

Is somebody posting under Jim’s name? I can’t believe he’d be responsible for a post that didn’t quote the last sentence in the article:

“After all, this is a company who released a tablet device that couldn’t out-perform the BlackBerry PlayBook (RIMM).”

  • Paul Koenig

And while waiting the mythical 4 days, I pull out my iPhone which has my Keynote presentation synced via iCloud and hook it up to the projector.

  • http://twitter.com/kelake Clark MacLeod

I guess everything must work like a fairy tale in his world. I’ve never once sat in on a presentation using a win/powerpoint combo that didn’t look like a farce (or else required a great deal of prep beforehand). Meanwhile, those of us lucky enough to be able to use an iPhone or iPad are free from fuss whatsoever.
