What Google Maps actually just unveiled: Anxiety over Apple Maps

Massive Greatness:

What Google actually unveiled today is their own vulnerability in the space. Beyond a few tiny leaks, no one knows what Apple’s mapping product will be like. Google has by far and away the best mapping product on the planet. But they still felt the need to hold this meaningless press conference today. That’s fighting down, not up. And it’s a big mistake because it conveys the opposite of what Google was trying to convey: concern, not confidence.

Even before today’s non-event, I had been thinking more about Apple’s move into mapping. When the news broke, everyone knew it was a big deal, but I actually still think it’s being underplayed. It could be a massive deal.

that Google is supposed to be having a major conference in another couple of weeks just adds to the feeling that this was all about trying to say they did it first

But they forget that first isn’t as important as best and that multiple crash demo hardly says best at this point.

If Google was confident about it then it would say hey no problem we have superior map only available in Android. But they not acting like it. Their minions in blogosphere are not acting like it.

For Apple it is simple Google tried to play hard ball with mapping features and Apple simply walked away. Street View and Turn by Turn in not available in Maps.app so how can a user miss those features.

All of sudden Google woke up to fact that it has no cards to play but their own Android.

Google is already charging big users to use Google Maps API, all Apple has to say is you can use ours free that would kill Google even more.
