Irish Prime Minister visits with Apple employees in Cork

I’m in Ireland this week and picked up this little tidbit. Here is the Irish Prime Minister meeting with Apple employees in Cork.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny visits with Apple employees in Cork, Ireland on Friday, April 27, 2012. Apple recently announced plans to expand its presence in Cork, adding over 500 new jobs to support the company's growing business across Europe.

No argument there. But I’m confused. Are you saying people and corporations won’t take every tax advantage they can find? Or are you addressing the first commenter?

Politicians, at the behest of special interest, write laws and amendments specifically designed to benefit said interests. Taking advantage of “legal” loopholes doesn’t make Apple guilty of bankrupting nations anymore than pointing out that these loopholes are in the tax codes makes one an apologist.

But it is telling just how much hand wringing and gnashing of teeth these articles generate when Apple’s name is called out in light of the fact that this is old news, and old practices being utilized by every single multinational on the planet. There is no need to “defend” Apple against accusations of entirely legal tax dodges when quite literally everyone is doing it, because that’s how business is done. Arguing that we should “expect more of Apple” is retarded, because no corporation in it’s right mind will pay more for anything when they can knowingly keep costs low and stay within the law.
