Apple will not release iPad 3 at Macworld or CES

Reports began circulating earlier today that Apple would release two new iPads at Macworld Expo in January. These rumors are completely false.

I checked with a number of my sources today and an iPad 3 is not planned for release at Macworld. In case you’re wondering, an iPad 3 won’t be released at CES either.

You can also mark a TV off your list for either one of those shows too — it’s not going to happen, according to my sources.

An Apple spokeswoman declined comment.

Apple withdrew from Macworld Expo back in 2009 and has not attended the show since. In fact, Apple has withdrawn from most, if not all, tradeshows in the last couple of years.

  • Has DigiTimes ever been right? It seems they’re in the business of spreading purchase freezing rumors with no basis in fact.

    • I’ve always said the same thing. People should beware that site.

Wow! I just read the leaked iPad 3 feature list and release date, and I must say it’s pretty amazing. Can’t wait to pick mine up!

    •  DigiTimes actually helping Android camp by spreading rumors

I can only imagine a conspiracy theory in which DigiTimes spreads rumours just to make everyone disappointed in Apple when the product is released (like 4S), thus giving more users to competitors. Or they are stupid. Ha.

  • “These rumors are completely false.”

you left off “..and stupid as hell.”

  • Whatsittoya

A bunch of made up stuff, yeah, sure.  BUT there’s money to be made on APPL speculation.

  • His Shadow

I’m left with the conclusion that this is stock manipulation. Because really, after all this time, is anyone this damn ignorant about Apple? I don’t give analysts much slack anymore but this is entirely beyond the pale.

    • zato

“I’m left with the conclusion that this is stock manipulation. ” I doubt it. It’s much more likely about killing sales. Making people wait. So that competitors can catch up.

      • His Shadow

If it was about killing sales, it would have come out at some point prior to holiday sales. It’s about the upcoming quarterly report and manipulating the expectations.

        • zato

“If it was about killing sales, it would have come out at some point prior to holiday sales. “

It did.  Now it’s restated (altered a little) to hold those who might spend received Christmas money on one.

          • Vamsmack

So you’re saying these rumours are there to stop people spending money on the current devices so they will spend it on the next?

That’s a really odd idea considering that there is nothing to be announced at either of these conferences.

          • zato

“So you’re saying these rumours are there to stop people spending money on the current devices so they will spend it on the next?”

No, I did NOT say that.

          • Vamsmack

Nah that’s what you said it just sounds stupid when it’s be phrased properly.

          • His Shadow

            Ha Ha Ha. No.

…and my old SE30 is not going to the moon either! …sort of obvious. Smacks of desperation to print something…anything, with Apple in the headline. But then, when you’re in the business of stock manipulation, one of those baseless rumours you continually run up the flagpole will, one day, stick long enough to get a salute.

  • The Cappy

“You can also mark a TV off your list for either one of those shows too — it’s not going to happen, according to my sources.”

Not going to happen at these shows? or not at all?

  • color me unsurprised 🙂

and what about the 24th of February, Steve birth anniversary ?

    • What about April 1, when Steve Jobs founded Apple?

    • Anonymous

Why would Apple get attached to a particular date? I know it’s Steve, but Apple doesn’t rush products to meet someone’s birthday. It is more likely that Apple would do a homage in its website and campus.

    • Vamsmack

What about the 13th of April the day their most important customer was born? (spoiler alert that’s my birthday).

  • Gretchen

Well stone the crows, Apple will not announce a new product at two industry trade shows that Apple does not attend.

Why do the usual rumour sites continue with this crud, hyping the un-announced and unicornware.

It does not take an advanced degree in bullshitology to understand Apple’s product release cycle.

iPad 3 will be announced march 2012, will be on sale mar / april 2012. The fact that Dalrymple had to approach his own sources to debunk what is blindingly obvious only goes to show that the vast majority of the online Apple press are morons. Thankfully in the Loop we have one sensible news outlet in a sea of rumour faeces.

Now, to smack those stoned crows back over the fence and watch those sites backtrack as the carcasses of rumours litter their lawns.

Those who continue to publish Digitimes rumors need to explain how many times they require a source to be proven false before they stop believing them.

Digitimes : How gullible can you be?

  • Anonymous

What’s the big deal here. So Apple doesn’t announce at CES or Macworld, but it is likely they announce something between Jan and Feb. So does it really matter where they make their announcement.

    • The important part of this is in the details that the source consistently gets wrong. People who base their purchasing decisions on garbage rumormongering are a lot better off learning which sources they can trust on the details.

      • Anonymous

Actually, I don’t even mind the rumors themselves as they’ll continue to happen and nothing we can do about it.

The bigger problem is the hyping up of all these rumors. When you see the main story on Techmeme being one of these rumors yet again, you wonder what the priority is. I guess there’s a reason why tabloids are popular and make lots of money.

        • We can do something; we can publicly ridicule rumors and gently correct our friends who assume repetition makes them true. Just as we do for people we know who read crap tabloids and call it “news,” right?

“Bigger problem”? You’re drawing a distinction where there is none. What part of publishing a rumor in the first place isn’t also “hype”?

    • Player_16

“but it is likely they announce something…”  Can you point out to me as to when the last time Apple ‘announced something’ before it’s time? Usually, when they do, it’s in a invite to one of their planned events… as a hint.

      • Anonymous

I don’t understand your point. Reread my post again as I never implied anything you’re saying here. Certainly, an Apple event is usually preceded by some invitation. And often Apple ships product soon after the announcement although it was months when the first iPhone was announced that it shipped.

        • Player_16

I’m only “quoting” what you said and responding to that which I “quoted”.

It is nearly impossible to release any Apple product in Macworld or CES for years to come. Are you serious?

  • darlaj

I’m surprised the numerologists and astrologers haven’t weighed in.

  • Like most Apple rumor mongers, the thought is: If we make enough guesses we may eventually be right on one.

What’s to lose? Even the crazy predictions get great press — like this one, on here. This idea is a crazy one because these days Apple doesn’t need a convention venue to get some tech press — they call a simple news conference, on their timing, and every major media player in the world shows up. Usually because NOBODY really knows  in advance what will be announced.

  • Vamsmack

I admit I get a little thrill hearing about supposed new Apple products. It’s like the conversation the girlfriend I just finished having. If we win the lottery tomorrow which is $31 Million what would we do? It’s nice to dream but until it’s confirmed here or Apple announces it that’s all it is just wishful thinking.

How is this an insightful article?

Apple don’t do CES or Macworld…

“you checked with your sources” – I’m pretty sure Wikipedia has this info.

  • Arnold Ziffel

Just happened to be watching CNN this morning and caught their “Business” report by Deb Feyerich (sp?), and she said something along the lines of “Thinking of buying an iPad? Well, you might just wait, because DigiTimes is saying Apple is going to release two new models at the end of January….”

This has to be a deliberate attempt to freeze sales, when all they had to do was do just a tiny bit of research to debunk the DigiTimes rumor.

    Goddamned “news” media!!!

  • No conspiracy going on here. It’s just DigiTimes trying to get more pageviews, pure and simple.

    • Arnold Ziffel

Yep, I think you’re probably right – DigiTimes is just looking for pageviews…but CNN is not doing anything resembling real reporting when they spew this sort of non-sense.  If they feel they have to report the DigiTimes “article”, then they ought to inform their viewers of DigiTimes’s dubious reliability.  Also, they could have reported “More reliable tech sources, such as Loop Insight, have debunked this story”.

      • It’s always been cheaper and easier to quote someone else’s press release than to hire a reporter who’d write something original based upon actual research.

  • Arnold Ziffel

I don’t look to CNN for news, but I sure don’t want them spreading FUD to the masses.  CNN is worse than worthless, as are all the other networks as well.

  • Rob

Surely apple would deny ipad3, else no-one would buy and ipad 2 for the next 30 days.

  • Matthias

What about other shows – like a special event or a developer conference? Did you ask ’em that too?

  • Jim Says No.

Why does anyone even bother with Digitimes anymore? I honestly don’t get it.

  • Hm

Not sure why you bothered checking with your sources. Anyone who knows anything about Apple knows that they don’t release  hardware at conferences like these. Honestly, it’s like 95% of the people who write rumours or stories about Apple don’t have a clue who they are.

  • Hopefully iPad 3 will be release this year.
