PayPal regrets Regretsy kerfuffle

Regretsy, the “fail blog of hand crafts,” recently notified users that it wouldn’t be able to give donations as part of its Christmas gift fund-raising effort because the program ran afoul of payment service PayPal’s terms of service. Regretsy explained the fallout in a lengthy, occasionally profane blog post, casting PayPal in an unfavorable light – inflexible, humorless, bureaucratic and – during the Christmas-season, positively Scrooge-like in its behavior:

Apparently we made the mistake of using the “Donate” button, which Paypal is now claiming is only for nonprofit organizations to use. They froze the account, which also includes Zazzle money that we use to make emergency gifts. That money isn’t in issue, but what the hell! Might as well keep everything!

Following the predictable howls of outrage from the assembled throngs, PayPal has reversed course. In a blog post entitled, “Regretsy Issue Resolution,” PayPal director of communications Anuj Nayar explained that PayPal has released the funds it had held and was trying to work with Regretsy to make a donation to help their cause:

We appreciate that this can be an inconvenience, but we have a responsibility to all our customers – both donors and recipients; and buyers and sellers. In this instance, we recognized our error and moved as swiftly as possible to fix it.

When I heard the original story, I rolled my eyes and thought to myself “well, that’s Paypal for you.”

Some of the quotes are even more eyebrow-raising than usual, though, such as the “You can use the donate button to raise money for a sick cat, but not poor people.”

But where I got annoyed was with Paypal’s apology. They offer a “sorry,” in the first paragraph, then spend two more paragraphs backtracking on it, describing reasonable policies that they chose not to apply (without mentioning that they chose not to apply them). They simply ignore the horrible customer service they gave and try to make it sound like they acted reasonably, only made a minor mistake.

    What tools.

For what it’s worth, the Regretsy blog says they haven’t yet been contacted by PayPal, despite the public reponse.

I don’t know anything about this Regretsy thing.

What I do know is that we’ve used PayPal for years and it works very well for us for online payments, including international.

My Chase Bank also doesn’t charge a service charge at its ATMs for using my PayPal debit card. So I can get near-instant transfers via cash withdrawals and then depositing that cash into my Chase account.

Well, lucky you! I’ve once been on the end of a heated conference call with an international colleague on the one side and PayPal on t’other, after which I surfed the blogs and fora to encounter scores of aggrieved customer complaints about arbitrarily frozen assets and suchlike…

Exactly! They hold funds for no reason at all. I’ve been burnt myself by Paypal. The only reason this is being addressed by them is because of the media. Otherwise there are thousands of merchants like myself whose stories go unheard like here: http://www.aboutpaypal.org/ because not enough fuss has been made about it.

Oh, f*** you, PayPal in disguise
