∞ 80% of people will skip stores on Black Friday

Nielsen:

Recent weekly Nielsen surveys of shoppers show that, much like in 2010, the majority of consumers (80%) are avoiding in-store Black Friday shopping. While increased Black Friday promotions appeal to consumer’s desire for “hot deals,” as a shopping event, Black Friday is becoming less relevant in the retail world as online shopping grows and holiday promotions begin earlier and earlier in the year. In fact, 35 percent of those recently survey cited they’ve already started their holiday shopping.

Most retailers started putting out Christmas items in October – which annoys me to no end. But the reason I stopped shopping Black Friday years ago is that they bait & switch too much. They put a big ticket item on sale but only have 5 in stock (or whatever), hoping you dump a bunch of cash on the other items that aren’t on sale.

Quite frankly, much of what goes on sale for the holidays isn’t really that great of a bargain anyway.

I’ve already had my fill of holiday crowds, shopping, and music in one afternoon shopping trip two weeks back.  Going out on Black Friday is insanity for any self-respecting misanthrope (though if you’re a pickpocket, it’s perfectly understandable- happy hunting!)

I’m naively hoping that Small Business Saturday will catch on. http://smallbusinesssaturday.com/
