∞ DJ at Microsoft store opening using a MacBook

They even tried to cover up the Apple logo with a plastic Microsoft cover.

Maybe it was a pre-production HP Envy?

    Aftonbladet.se: 348 requests, 1.94MB and 1.3 minutes

Now why does that not surprise me?

I bet the slower load on the Loop vs. Daring Fireball is the badges (not a complaint, the Loop redesign is awesome).

When you tested Macworld (I’m assuming you have Macword Insider) were you seeing ads or were they off?

I’m an Ars premiere subscriber and the site is hugely faster when I’m logged in and ads are off.

I’m an Adblock Plus subscriber and every site is hugely faster when the ads are off.

ESPN: 140 requests, 88.89KB, 22.48 seconds, though several of those requests and a lot of the time appeared to be in the background after most of the page had loaded.

Would you mind giving details on how to get these stats from Safari’s web inspector?

    • Guest

      It’s the “Network” button.

        Thanks. Now I get it.

Load page, inspect element, clear cache.
In timeline, hit record and reload page at the same time.

Red line is when the page has loaded (except for asynchronous elements). Repeat the test by clearing the results and record/reload again. This will give you both results for uncached and cached.

The requests and page weight (minus cached elements) will be at the bottom of the network tab.

It looks like the bulk of the MB is a Flash video ad, at least when I loaded it. 5.39 MB that won’t be loaded by most mobile devices. Also took most of the time: 5.08 seconds. I didn’t see more than about a dozen JavaScript files, nor did I have the “janky” scrolling. What bugs me most is the auto-play of the videos. At least it doesn’t include audio.

I’m assuming you have Flash enabled in Safari. It would be interesting to see any differences with Flash disabled.

Did you do these tests uncached or cached? How do you measure loading time? DOM Ready (blue line) or DOM Loaded (red line)? Or an objective measure? (Elements can continue to load after DOM Load).

  • http://twitter.com/ErikVeland Erik Veland

For the record, the load time for me on Loop insight is 2.73 cached and 2.53s uncached. Server latency is most of the load time for modern desktop browsers.

It looks like the crazy number of requests for BGR come from all the Like / Tweet / G+ buttons.

I wonder if BGR has made any changes since Gruber’s report.

Quick q: what about the google reader mobile interface? I route all my favorite sites thought there, and only now wonder if I might be doing more harm than good…

loopinsight.com comes in at 34 requests, 261.63 KB transferred when force-reloading (that is, holding down the shift key while pressing the reload button in Safari). The onLoad event triggered after 1.75s (I’m on a 10 Mbit/s connection). The payload included a plus.google.com widget coming in at 41 KB compressed, Google Analytics at 13 KB compressed, and Reinvigorate at 8 KB compressed (really – why use both?).

daringfireball.com comes in at 23 requests, 94 KB transferred, onLoad event at 1.2s in my test.
