∞ Remembering our Veterans

November 11 is a day of remembrance. In Canada it’s Remembrance Day, in the US it’s Veterans Day — whatever it’s called, today we remember the sacrifices of the men and women that protect our countries. This is not a day to remember or celebrate war, but rather a day to be thankful that so many people believed enough in our freedom that they were willing to fight for us to keep it.

I would like to thank all veterans and currently serving military personnel for your sacrifice.

Growing up in family that’s been in three generations of the military before me, I thank the soldiers out there who keep my country safe. I didn’t always agree with gov’t policies of how we use those who are willing to sacrifice their lives for us.

They are the toughest SOBs on the face of the earth and all I have left to say is ‘Oohrah!”

My strategy for avoiding the jungles of Viet Nam was to join the Navy in 1969 at the age of 19. I figured the worst that could happen was that I got assigned to a ship off the coast.

Well, it worked better than I expected. I not only scored high on my tests in boot camp, I got assigned to air traffic control school in Georgia and then to NAS Barber’s Pt., Hawaii for the duration of my four years.

Though I was safely out of the fray of the war, I had a chance to view some of the artifacts of the Pearl Harbor attack thirty years earlier.

Though I’m against war for its insane destruction and its high cost in lives and resources, I do support my country’s commitment over its history to “fighting evil.” I also look at the aftermaths and see the positive things we’ve done for our former enemies in Germany, Japan, Viet Nam, Iraq, etc.

I’m against war, but not against more constructively exerting our power and influence as a nation to effect peace and liberty in the world.

The only way I can thank veterans is by not voting for fools who cut their benefits while waving the flag for new, unjustified wars.
