∞ LEGO Universe to close in January

Edge:

A post from the team on the game’s forums reads: “Today we are very sad to announce that Lego Universe will be closing. This was a very difficult decision to make, but unfortunately Lego Universe has not been able to attract the number of members needed to keep the game open.

LEGO Universe debuted in October, 2010 for Mac and PC, but never had the impact on the MMO market that its developers and publisher expected. LEGO Universe had a difficult time attracting players despite an effort to make parts of the game free to play starting this past summer. LEGO Universe shuts down for good in January.

After reading the article, it appears the MMO was plagued with delays from the start:

[...] scheduled for release in mid-2008, it went on to miss planned launches in November 2008 and 2009. It eventually went live on October 26 last year.

Considering its launch date was pushed out by ~two years, this makes me wonder how well the title was marketed. Was there an excited market in 2008 that grew tired of waiting? Were the delays not enough to fix issues in the game that later pushed customers away?

The entire MMO marketplace has changed dramatically over the past few years. Fewer and fewer customers are willing to pay a monthly, quarterly or annual subscription fee. Even if this had debuted in 2008, they would have had an uphill climb to attract a critical mass of subscribers.
