∞ Netflix loses 800,000 subscribers

GigaOM:

Netflix’s subscriber attrition in the wake of a price hike and separation of its streaming and DVD businesses is even greater than first thought. The company ended the quarter with 23.8 million subscribers in the third quarter, which is down 810,000 from the previous quarter.

Too bad. Netflix offers a great service and I don’t disagree with splitting off the DVD business. They haven’t communicated very well in the past few months, but I still hope they can make it out of this mess.

Meanwhile, for those of us in Canada, absolutely nothing has changed.

Except through their gradual expansion of content I can now watch My Name is Earl.

So you survived the 30 day trial period? We cancelled about 20 days in due to lack of programs of interest to us.

Holy cow…  Anything they do to try and reverse that trend may still be see as “flailing”.

With any services business, you gain some, you lose some. While the number of lost subscribers looks huge, in the grand scheme of things, it’s only a very small percentage of their entire customer base. Over the next few months, they’ll likely gain many tens of thousands of new subscribers. Keep in mind, that they are also launching in new countries soon. So we must factor in a potential initial influx of new subscribers.

We tried Netflix years ago when it was DVD only. Pretty awkward and the selection wasn’t so good. So we quit.

We’ve been back for a while now with streaming only via 2nd gen Apple TV. A number of titles are still DVD only, and the selection is still not that great.

But at least it’s far more convenient and pretty cheap for what it is, which is a frequent alternative to renting movies or buying TV episodes from iTunes.

We do both, with the result of us having Bright House pick up their cable TV boxes which saves us $20/mo.

I think Netflix will survive in some form or fashion as long as they remain flexible, which is more than can be said about these recent customers leaving.
