A great quote from the article was towards the bottom, and summarizes why I believe Apple targeted Samsung:

“Apple is prepared to give Android device makers a license to “some lower level patents” but it wants to reserve various design elements and functionalities exclusively for iOS.”
Apple is all about the experience, and this is their differentiator. Samsung allegedly copied some of Apple’s design magic hence the legal actions.
