∞ Amazon interested in buying Palm

VentureBeat:

A well-placed source tells us that HP is currently looking to rid itself of Palm as soon as possible, and that Amazon is the closest to finalizing the deal, among a handful of contenders.

If true, it means that HP’s new CEO is also ready to give up on any kind of mobile strategy for the company. I still think webOS is a great mobile operating system and in the right hands, it could help pull a company into second place in the tablet market.

It could be that HP will adopt a Windows 8 based mobile strategy.

Which makes little sense when they have Palm.

I never said it was the sensible thing to do :)

As many people have been saying, the Amazon Fire is a distinctly different class of device than the iPad and the Touchpad. If Amazon ends up buying Palm to make it’s own Touchpad like device, I think that will put an end to this whole “Kindle fire is an iPad killer” nonsense.

In any case, I’m not certain this would be a good move for Amazon, but it’s one I’d be super happy about. It would be very good to have a competitor to the iPad around to motivate Apple to keep getting better, and Amazon would definitely do a good job here.

On the one hand I’d be glad to see webOS find a new home, even better if it’s in a company that has some sense,
but I wonder if Amazon would be willing to actually make an iPad competitor?

As you implied, the Kindle Fire isn’t positioned as one, but webOS is able to power one.
Then again, if they were to go all-in on this, Apple could be faced with a device that can compete in terms of OS quality and content.
Hardware quality and developer support/endorsement is a different matter, but not unfixable.
