∞ Amazon Kindle Fire; 7-inch tablet for $199

Bloomberg:

The Kindle Fire will have a 7-inch display and sell for $199, compared with $499 for Apple’s cheapest iPad, Amazon executives said. The device, a souped-up version of the Kindle electronic-book reader, will run on Google Inc.’s Android software, the Seattle-based company said.

A lot of people are going to buy this.

Seems like a very positive launch, and what I hoped Amazon would do: focused product, don’t try to do everything, cheap price. Will be very interested to see where this goes.

I agree with Jim. Lots of people are going to buy this.

But the incessant comparisons the the iPad? This is not a competitor to the iPad, no more than the Kindle was, as the Fire is not as capable.

But it’s always amusing how when something is priced less than the iPad, price is important. When the price is equivalent or greater than the iPad, then it’s all about specs.

Yeah, definitely not an iPad competitor.

Seriously, I think this could become the #2 tablet after iPad if the launch goes well and the product turns out as good as the demo, including good battery life and performance.

The price is right and the content/media available will be strong for sure, since it’s Amazon.

No doubt in my mind it will be number 2.

Nice. With that comment you’ve covered your bases. It’ll either actually be “second best”, or “crap”. Either way you’d be correct. :P

They released exactly what I was expecting, a custom interface to their entertainment services. This one truly IS a content consumption device. I also believe it’ll be a massive hit.
