∞ Here's what to do If you have Lion GM installed and want to download it from the Mac App Store

I little tip that was sent to me on Twitter this morning. For those os us that had Lion GM installed, you found that you couldn’t download the retail version of the operating system from the Mac App Store. Mine said a newer version was already installed.

All you need to do is hold down the Option key on your Mac and click the install button on the Mac App Store and it will download for you.

    But is it necessary?

I did that, and it just says “Installed”. Guess that means GM is the same?

Mine said “Installed” too.  What I actually did was go to the “purchased” link and option clicked on lion in that list (which takes you to the main page for Lion) and I could then click the “install” link.

Hooray!  This worked!  i found plenty of blog posts about this problem, but none suggested what you did.  Thanks, Scott!

Same here – showing installed and thus cannot hold option and click install again.

Same same here. No idea what to do.

I had the problem with it saying “installed”.  What I did was go to the purchased page, and option-clicked on the lion application from that page.  That gave me an “install” button.  YMMV.

What do you do if you aren’t a developer and installed the GM? It just says installed, and it’s not in my Purchases because I am not a developer so apple doesn’t know I have Lion GM.

my download failed but it says installed ?? called Apple and they said, Hold down the option key and click, which does absolutely nothing for me :(.

they also said it is a known problem and they should fix it in the next 12 hours ?? bet they don’t :) and I will be asking for my cash back in 13 hours.

i got the same problem, what i did was go to the Featured page, on the right menu click + Option key on the the “OS X Lion” link, that would redirect to the lion page and “click + option key” on buy, and your Lion would start downloading

If you can’t get the button to say buy now even if you are option + clicking every lion link you can see. Try deleting the lion installer from your computer. Probably in applications or downloads folder. Make sure to empty your trash first. Then try option+clicking again on the lion link on featured page on the right hand side.

Jordan, you da man.  I found “Install Mac OS X Lion.app” in the applications folder (3.76GB).  Ran it and it’s starting the Lion installation. thx

    • Jon

I will attest to Jordan being the man!  I had an old DP 4 installer sitting in my downloads folder and as soon as I 86′d it, the option+click in the App Store worked!

Hi this worked for me too.! Remove the old GM  app from downloads folder. Then you will be able to DL lion from the App store no problem.

      Perfect! Thank you, sir.

Thanks man! After hours of experimenting, finally something that works!

Why is this necessary? The GM IS the final release…. I don’t understand this article at all….

    • Joao

Can you guarantee there were no last minute changes in the GM?

    • guest

someone can still be on DP4 or earlier (like me) so this helps them as well

The post is wrong – you option click the Purchases tab in the app store, then is lets you download.

  • Childs12111

I’m sorry but I don’t see the lion installer anywhere, what exactly am I looking for?  I’ll try a spotlight search.

  • guyveruit

hold down alt/option BEFORE you clcik the App store then CONTINUE to hold the alt/option button and navigate the the LION download page, click the $29.99 button (STILL HOLDING ALT/OPTION) and it will change to purchase app. there you go. Just HOLD ALT/OPTION the entire time and you can purchase it. this method is for those that have the Developers GM installed. if you already bought it just go to the purchaced tab and option click lion, it will re download it for you
