∞ Parallels offers Enterprise Edition

Parallels on Monday announced Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac Enterprise Edition, a new version of their virtual machine software for Mac OS X. It’s available to businesses as an annual subscription service.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]Parallels Desktop for Mac enables Intel-based Mac users to install and use Windows and other non-Mac operating system software without having to restart their computers, unlike with Apple’s own Boot Camp software. The new release is aimed at businesses that support Macs in such cofigurations.

Features in Parallels Desktop 6 Enterprise Edition include the ability for IT departments to pre-configure versions of the software that are policy-compliant with their setups. Software Update policies are configurable through the IT department and managed through local update servers.  A “Mass Deployment Application” is provided to enable centralized configuration and distribution packages, as well.

The software subscription service incorporats a unified Parallels volume license key. That key also provides IT departments with what Parallels calls “priority business class support,” along with access to new software updates, beta programs and major version releases.

Long time Parallels user, and in general a fan, but I can’t see a real IT department springing for a volume license until they get it to stop kernel panic’ing.

I am reluctantly using Parallels, but I am thoroughly sick of the constant upgrade nags and demands for payments for upgrades. I will go buy whichever is the first of Parallels or VMware that goes on the App Store (or VirtualBox if it gets aero support and a speed bump) and stick with that.,

After the iPad Star Trek PADD article, I was expecting this to be about a new Parallels feature to run the USS Enterprise’s computer in a VM. Very disappointed.

Coincidentally, the same thought passed through my mind as I wrote the headline. :)
